Good day everybody! Cervantes Students activity !
Hello guys this is a short homework where you need to translate into English the following Anne Frank quotation.
“Women should be respected as well! Generally speaking, men are held in great esteem in all parts of the world, so why shouldn't women have their share? Soldiers and war heroes are honored and commemorated, explorers are granted immortal fame, martyrs are revered, but how many people look upon women too as soldiers?...Women, who struggle and suffer pain to ensure the continuation of the human race, make much tougher and more courageous soldiers than all those big-mouthed freedom-fighting heroes put together!” ― Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl

The following exercise is for Geography and History satudents only!
Prefix, Root Word, and Suffix Study Sheet
Name: _________________________________________ Date: _______________
A prefix is a word part with a specific meaning at the beginning of a word.
A suffix is a word part with a specific meaning at the end of a word.
A root word is the main part of a word that contains its core meaning. Sometimes it is a word on its own, as in unbelievable (believe is the root word), and sometimes it cannot stand alone, as in relocation (loc is the root word). In either case, prefixes and suffixes can be added to root words, which might change either the meaning of the word (reactivate, deactivate) or its grammatical function (transports = present tense, transported = past tense, transportation = noun). Sometimes spelling changes when suffixes are added to root words (noise, noisy).
Learning root words, prefixes, and suffixes can help you because:
• If you recognize these word parts, it is easier to figure out what a word you don’t know means.
• They can help you to spell words because you’ll remember patterns.
Instructions: As you read this paragraph, underline all words that have prefixes or suffixes. Write them below the paragraph and then write a definition of the word. If you do not know the definition, use the Make-a-Word Game Chart to help you guess.
The Garbage Problem
Improper garbage disposal can cause contamination of subterranean water sources. Relocating garbage dumps doesn’t necessarily solve this incredibly unhealthful problem. Laws preceding the discovery of this problem were predictably relaxed in terms of garbage disposal. Since the discovery, authorities have proceeded to toughen these laws and have injected funds into reevaluating ongoing practices. Interjection of environmental organizations has helped to convince an incredulous public of the depth of the problem and the need to recycle. Some garbage dumps have receded in size, but most have increased as the unbelievable amount of garbage produced continues to multiply unnecessarily.

The True Story of Halloween
By Lisa Page
Halloween originated thousands of years ago, making it one of the oldest holidays. The Halloween that we celebrated today, has had many influences from many cultures over the years, such as the Roman's Pomona Day, Celtic festival of Samhain, and the Christian holidays of All Saints and All Souls Days.
Hundreds of years ago the Celts lived, in what we now Great Britain and Northern France. They worshipped nature and had many gods, the sun god being their favorite. This was the god that dictated their work and their rest schedules. He was also known for making the earth beautiful and the crops grow plentiful .
Celtic New Year was on November 1st. Every year, the Celts celebrated, with a festival and marking the end of summer, (the season of the sun) and the beginning of winter (the season of darkness and cold.)
On October 31st once all the crops were harvested and stored away for the long winter, they would extinguish the cooking fires in the homes. The Celtic priests, also called Druids, would gather in the dark oak forest (oak trees were considered sacred) upon the hilltop. Here they would make new fires and offer sacrifices consisting of crops and animals. They would then begin to dance around the fires. It was at this ceremony the season of the sun would pass and the season of darkness would begin.
In the morning the Druids took an ember from their fires and gave it to each of the families. They would take the ember home and start new cooking fires. These fires would keep the homes warm and free from evil spirits, until the season of sun returned.
November 1st was the festival called Samhain (pronounced "sow-en"). This festival lasted for 3 days. People would parade around in costumes made from the skins and heads of animals. It was this festival that became the first Halloween
During the first century that the Romans invaded Britain, they brought many of their festivals and customs, with them. One of these was Pomona Day, named for their goddess of fruits and gardens. This festival was also celebrated around November 1st. After hundreds of years of Romans, the Celtic's Samhain festival became mixed with the Roman's Pomona Day creating one major fall holiday.
The next influence came about when the new Christian religion spread throughout Europe and Britain. In the year 835 AD the Roman Catholic Church made November 1st a church holiday honoring all the saints. This day was called All Saint's Day, Hallowmas, or All Hallows. Years later, the church called November 2nd, All Souls Day, to honor the dead. It was celebrated with big bonfires, parades, and people dressing up as saints, angels and devils.
The spread of Christianity did not make people forget their customs. People continued to celebrate the festivals of Samhain and Pomona Day on October 31st. Over the years all customs from these holidays mixed. October 31st was All Hallow Even, later All Hallow's Eve, Hallowe'en and then Halloween, as we know it today.
Halloween as we know it, includes all of these influences, Pomona Day's apples, nuts, and harvest, the Festival of Samhain's black cats, magic, evil spirits and death, All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day, ghosts, skeletons and skulls.

Does violence in video games contribute to real life violence? by Aaron Michael
Does violence in video games contribute to real life violence? by Aaron Michael

The question is highly controversial. There is no hard evidence to support one side or the other. In my personal experience, video games I have played have had significant influence on my thought patterns and behavioral impulses. For instance, after playing a racing game for an hour or two, getting in the car to drive I found myself taking harder turns and accelerating faster. Is it coincidence? I think not. Did I consciously choose to drive more aggressively? No. It was simply mental conditioning from the "training" of the video game which altered my style of driving without my even thinking about it.
Everyone learns differently, and maybe for some people video games have no influence on their real life at all. However in my case, I know that the answer would be yes, if I were to play violent video games. Because I know this to be the case, I don't play violent video games. I know I am also strongly influenced by what I see on TV and in movies, and what I read. Consequently I avoid watching movies or television, or reading books that depict situations or actions which I would not want myself involved in or doing.
The thing about video games and other entertainment is that in order to make a profit, the designers need to include something that sets their product ahead of the rest. The easiest way to do this, besides top-notch graphics, is to include an element of shock. As a result, with the passage of time, games become more violent, more explicit, more illicit, or what have you. Meanwhile, the consumer becomes increasingly desensitized to higher levels of violence, etc. In a progression of consistent usage, eventually the violence becomes normal. Without knowing it, violence has become part of the mental processes of the consumer.
Consider a hypothetical test subject living an average life who has had a high level of involvement in violent video games. At some given point in the subject's life they may face a problem or conflict in which violence is one of a number of possible solutions, but not the most beneficial or effective one. Having played it out in their mind so many times, it only makes sense that a violent course of action would more quickly present itself in their mind and seem a more acceptable or normal course of action and thus easier to adopt as a solution than it would otherwise, if they had not had the same level of exposure to it. This is not to say that the subject would definitely take a violent course of action, but it does make it more likely.
I think that by increasing the likelihood of violent actions in the way described above and in other ways, violence in video games does contribute to real life violence. Do I think it is the sole or primary cause? Actually, I don't. Video games have been around less than 100 years. Violence, however, has been around since the beginnings of human history. The first child ever born murdered his younger brother out of jealousy. The causes of violence are numerous. Video game violence is not the cause of real life violence, but I think it exacerbates the problem. Unfortunately, some people may convince themselves that by letting off steam in a video game through violent enactments, they are avoiding the actualization of such behavior in themselves and others. This is a tempting conclusion to draw. However, what is actually happening is that they are merely encouraging and reinforcing the root of violent behavior in themselves by permitting those feelings to go unchecked in a virtual environment.
Because it is not in the real world they feel it is harmless entertainment. However, letting that emotion have free reign within a simulated environment is a form of training and conditioning. It could be years later long after violent thought patterns have become ingrained and solidified in their minds that a situation in real life catches them off guard (as real-life is prone to do), and for that split second when they are not in control their mental-emotional conditioning reacts impulsively and they suddenly find that they have committed a horrible act in real life without even thinking about it. When questioned by the authorities, or their own conscience they will probably say something like, "I don't know what happened, one moment we were in an argument, and the next moment, so-and-so was on the floor in a pool of blood." God forbid such a thing should happen. The human mind is a sponge. It absorbs whatever liquid it is placed in. When we're squeezed, whatever has been brewing around in our heads comes out in our actions, one way or another.
It is important to understand the fundamental truth that whatever you surround yourself with will become part of who you are, regardless of what you think about it. If virtual reality has no impact on human behavior, then why are pilots trained in flight simulators? Why are there so many software programs available for everything from improving your golf swing to learning Spanish? To a certain degree, they work. We are fooling ourselves if we think that human behavior is not influenced by the things we see, hear and enact. Violent video games do contribute to real life violence because they train those who play them to act violently in real life.

Trying to set aside a small amount of spare time to find a new hobby can sound stressful if you are already struggling to find a good work- life balance. No hobby has to be all-consuming. It is possible to find a hobby that you can practice and enjoy as and when time allows. Having a hobby allows us to explore ourselves. Engaging in a hobby may be a way to find out what you are capable of. A hobby can be challenging or relaxing. It is entirely up to you to cross the boundary and find a which hobby suits you.
People who lead hectic lifestyles will find that they benefit from a relaxing hobby. If at the end of the day you find yourself sat in a cosy chair losing yourself in a good book then what better hobby could you find. For as long as you are living and breathing that storyline you are unwinding and forgetting your day to day worries. Many people find time management difficult. If you take up a hobby and find that you enjoy it then you may well find that your time management skills become honed.
At certain times during our lives many of us find that we feel isolated. Embarking on a new hobby can help you recover from the `empty nest syndrome`, a recent divorce or bereavement. A group hobby is especially good for social purposes. If you find yourself looking at a hobby that involves group participation then undoubtedly you will meet new people along the way. The hobby that started out as one hour per week enjoying floral art or car maintenance may lead you to find that you are invited to attend a group coach outings or an annual dinner dance.
A hobby allows us to find confidence in ourselves that we may have temporarily lost. If the hobby demands that we are creative and a certain amount of praise comes our way then it can boost our self esteem. If you are fortunate you will find a hobby that costs little to enjoy. An inexpensive hobby is just as easy to find as one that will cost you a small fortune. Temper the hobby to your income or it may end up being a source of stress that you can well do without.
Taking up a new hobby is something that can be done at any stage during your life.
